The now famous acai berry once lived in obscurity only known to the local people of Central and South America where the berry grows. The acai tree grows in the marsh lands that surround the Amazon river especially in Brazil. The combination of this difficult terrain and the exceptionally fast spoiling time of the acai berry makes it very difficult to export the fresh berry to other countries.
