I am a Filipino but I was born here in the US. I have never been in the Philippines because my parents moved here even before I was conceived. My mom works as a nurse and my dad works as an engineer. During my dad’s free day, he takes care of live koi fish, and sells it to friends. I, on the other hand, help him in the feeding of koi fish and buying of koi fish supplies.

It was in my 18th birthday when my parents gave me a special gift, a vacation to the Davao City, Philippines, where my parents came from.

Going to my parents’ hometown tiring, we had to sit in the airplane for hours as well as transfer from one plane to another. But nevertheless, I was really excited. Although it was my first time to be home, the people there were not new to me. Thanks to the technology, I have met my grandparents, cousins, and other relatives through cyberspace. We talk online on a weekly basis.

As we arrived in the Davao International Airport, I saw my relatives waiting for us. I run towards my grandparents and hugged them tight, and so with my cousins as well. We directly went home to rest for a while and do some catching up. When we reached my grandparents’’ home, more relatives were there, it was a like feast. They also prepared a ‘welcome home’ banner and a lot of Filipino foods for us. I never felt so welcomed in my entire life.

We stayed there for three weeks. In those three weeks, we have been to mountain resorts, scuba diving, and island hopping. We also shopped for native bags and sarongs to give away for our friends back home in Chicago.

Davao was indeed a happy to place to be. I’ve not only enjoyed being with my relatives but also the warmth of its tropical weather. I surely loved it, and I am looking forward to come back year after year.
