It’s pretty easy to find university rankings, yet not as easy to determine exactly how the rankers came up with their listings. University ranking systems vary widely. Some focus on independent and very objective data, while others rank universities based on subjective reviews by students, faculty and others.
As you can imagine, some of the rankings become very subjective when too many interviews are used. On the other hand, objective data like “dropout rate” doesn’t do anything to tell you why so many students are dropping out. The best rankings are a combination of figures and subjective rankings. Here are some of the most common factors taken into account when ranking universities:
1. Academic Offering – This is a somewhat subjective, yet important piece of the rankings. Basically, rankers look for schools that have the best teachers in their respective fields, and offer the highest caliber programs in the fields of study they offer.
2. Resources – This measure looks at whether or not the school offers the tools the students need to succeed. It includes the student teacher ratio, number of tutors and other programs designed to help students academically.
3. Graduation rate- This ranking looks at the percentage of students who graduate (usually within six years) after entering the university.
4. Research – Most ranking systems evaluate the research department at the school, including how much income it brings in, how widely recognized it is and how highly ranked its individual researchers are.
5. Income – this is a look at both the income from tuition and the dollars donated by alumni. A school with more money can offer more resources.
6. Awards to Faculty and Staff- Some ranking systems evaluate how many prestigious awards, such as Nobel Peace Prizes and Fields Medals have been awarded to the faculty and staff.
7. Published Articles – Some rankings review the number of published articles coming out of a university. This is sometimes part of the review of the research department.
8. SAT Scores – Sometimes a school is ranked simply by how hard it is to get in. Looking at the average SAT scores of the student body is a good way to determine the difficulty of admission.
There are, of course, other criteria used by some ranking systems, but these are the most common criteria for overall ranking.
Many ranking systems will also measure these same criteria within each field of study that is offered by a university. Evaluating these rankings can be very helpful if you know your planned area of study. In fact, evaluating how a particular program ranks may be more important than the overall university ranking, especially if you are studying a highly specialized field that is not available at a wide range of colleges.
In the end, such ranking systems should be only part of your decision on where to go to college. It’s important, too, to choose a college where you feel comfortable and can enjoy the college experience while getting your education.

I’ve been dealing with a chronic hip injury for a long time now.  It’s not getting any better, and actually seems to be getting worse.  So, I decided to enlist the help of the local massage therapist that hangs around our squash courts.  She’s should be a millionaire by now, considering all the injuries the game of squash seems to inflict on it’s players.  Anyway, she did wonders for my hip.  It’s about 50% better after just one treatment, and hopefully after the next one it will be better again.  Maybe completely healed.  The online massage schools I’ve read about have suggested this kind of healing is possible.  But even the top massage schools online schools can’t guarantee it will work every time.  Either way, it’s definitely worth a try.

Sailing The Ocean Blue – The Real Story

Everybody loves looking at sailboats.  Even power boaters, as much as they would never admit it.  Pictures of sail boats crossing the sun as it slowly sets on a perfect day.  Seagulls wafting through the air, and a few couples old and new strolling down the beach.  How could you imagine a more beautiful and serene setting.  I have a hard time doing so.  I’ve always loved being around the water, ever since I was a little kid.  Probably something to do with my parents both being from the East coast of Canada, and spending many of my childhood summers in the tiny water surrounded city of Dalhousie New Brunswick.  Even though I grew up in Ontario, we never lived far from the water.  Sarnia, was surrounded by both the St. Clair River, and Lake Huron.  As I grew older, and moved to London, Ontario, I was still only an hour away from two of the Great Lakes.  Lake Huron or Lake Erie.  We spent several summers renting cottages along the Lake Huron shoreline, and not to surprisingly ended up owning a sailboat that we kept in the sleepy town of Bayfield Ontario.  Only an hour from London.

But let me tell you, owning a sailboat is not all smooth sailing.  Yes, bad pun intended.  There is plenty of stuff to deal with when owning a boat.  I’m not an overly hands on kind of guy when it comes to fixing things, and on a sailboat, there is plenty of stuff to fix.  Owning a boat I’ve found out, is just a little different from owning other mechanical devices like cars, appliances, furnaces, homes, and what have you.  Now, this probably more to do with where I keep my boat, but there is not a lot of places around to do work on the boat for you.  Our marina has one boat shop that does mechanical, fiberglass, electrical, rigging, and all that other stuff that goes with owning a boat.  But, the problem is, they’re the only place in town.  There are likely close to 500 boats in town.  Needless to say, it can be tough to get the attention of the local shop.  There’s just too many boaters for them to keep up with.

So, that means the work on your boat either doesn’t get done, or you learn to do it yourself.  In my case, it’s a little bit of both.  There are a few things I’ve done, even though I wasn’t 100% comfortable doing them.  Then there’s a whole bunch of other stuff that either just doesn’t get done because I don’t have the time, it feels like too much for me to do, or it’s not really all that important.  Quite often, I do end up spending time on the boat fixing, repairing, or maintaining things, when what I really should be doing is sailing it, reading a good book on it, or sipping some nice cool boat drinks.

Of all the things on my boat that need fixing, I think that is the most important.  I would be nice to spend all my boating time boating, and not playing Mr Handyman.
